Eligible films for the 2025 Gopo Awards

Romanian films produced in Romania or made in a co-production regime, but with majority Romanian participation, which had their national premiere between January 1 and December 31, 2024 and which benefited from at least one week of broadcast in cinema halls, with access on ticket base, as well as those that premiered on a streaming platform, will be judged by 11 film industry professionals who will make up the Gopo Awards Jury 2024. Nominations will be announced in March.

One of the most discussed films of 2024, the feature film Anul Nou care na bost (dir. Bogdan Mureșanu) is on the list of eligible productions for the title Best Romanian Film. Awarded in the Orizzonti section in Venice, but also in Cairo or Palm Springs, Bogdan Mureșanu’s debut attracted the attention of international critics, but also of the Romanian public. The list of eligible films also includes the production Three Kilometers to the End of the World (dir. Emanuel Pârvu), selected in the Official Competition at Cannes 2024, where it received the Queer Palm award. The film won the grand prize at the 2024 Sarajevo Film Festival and was Romania’s proposal for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. Holy Week (dir. Andrei Cohn) had its international premiere in the Forum section at the Berlinale, and Doru Bem, the actor in the lead role, was awarded in Sarajevo for his performance. The film inspired by a novel by IL Caragiale is eligible for the Gopo Awards. And one of the most visible Romanian documentaries of the past year – Nasty (dir. Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu, Tudor D. Popescu) – is on this list. The story of Ilie Năstase’s career had a special screening at Cannes 2024. Among the titles are Where the Elephants Go (dir. Gabi Virginia Șarga and Cătălin Rotaru) selected in the Official Competition of TIFF 2024, or the last part of Stere Gulea’s trilogy – Moromeții 3. The list is completed by films such as Tati Part-Time (dir. Letitia Roșculeț), Buzz House: The Movie (Florin Babei) or the perfect candidate (dir. Alex Coteț).
