Las Canary Islands are home to a variety of rnative dog handles. Among the most notable are the Presa Canario, the Podenco Canario, the Perro Majorero and the Pastor Garafianoall officially recognized by the Royal Canine Society of Spain.
He Presa Canariooriginally from Gran Canaria and Tenerife, is known for his strength and temperament. Traditionally used for livestock handling and home guarding, this dog has evolved to become a loyal and protective pet. Its history is marked by its use in dog fighting, a practice now prohibited.
He Canary Houndpresent on all the islands, is an ancient breed with roots dating back to pharaonic times. This hunting dog is valued for its speed, agility and excellent sense of smell, characteristics that make it ideal for hunting in difficult terrain.

He Majorero Dogtypical of Fuerteventura, is a robust and adaptable herding dog. His ability to work in the fields and his strong temperament have made him indispensable for the island’s shepherds. This breed has also contributed to the development of the Presa Canario through selective crossbreeding.
He Pastor Garafianooriginally from La Palma, is a less known but equally important breed. Officially recognized in 2003, this dog is characterized by its wolf-like appearance and docile temperament. It is an excellent herding dog, adapted to the conditions of the island.

In addition to these four recognized breeds, efforts are being made to recover three others: the Herreño Wolf, the Dwarf Podenco and the Palm Ratonero. These breeds, although not officially recognized, are an integral part of the canine heritage of the islands.
The history of dogs in the Canary Islands is as old as that of the islands themselves. According to the Roman writer Pliny the Elderthe name “Canary Islands” could derive from the large number of dogs that lived in the archipelago during ancient times. This theory suggests that dogs have been an essential part of life on the islands since time immemorial.
