Present at New York Comic Con 2024, James Gunn has answered many questions about the future of the DCU. The details given by the new architect of the DC Comics cinematic universe concern the projects that make up chapter 1 of this overhaul, Gods and Monsters. Superman
First of all, good news: the trailer is coming! When ? James Gunn has not announced a release date, only saying regarding the wait “It won’t be too long, but it won’t be right away“. This reboot will see David Corenswet (Twisters) put on Kal-El’s red cape for the first timealongside Rachel Brosnahan (The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel) who will slip into the role of Lois Lane, his eternal lover. Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max : Fury Road) will adopt the features of the villain Lex Luthor, while Krypto, the superdog from Krypton, will make his big cinema debut. After reassuring Henry Cavill fans, James Gunn explained that the film is currently “and square mounting“.
Creature Commandos
First series set in the new DCU, Creature Commandos suit a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. Available from December 5 streaming on Max, it promises to be as gory as it is badass, as you can see in the images above. Viola Davis will return to voice the terrible Amanda Waller, while the character of Rick Flag Sr. will make his debut there. This character will be featured in three DCU projects (he is also in the cast of Superman and season 2 of Peacemaker, this time in live-action).
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
The beginnings of KAra Zor-El, Superman’s cousin who escaped the explosion of his planet Krypton and now lives on Earth under the identity of Kara Danvers, are expected June 24, 2026 in dark rooms. Fans of House of the Dragon will not have failed to recognize one of the main actresses of the first season, Milly Alcock. The 24-year-old Australian actress will play a very young version of the character, which confirms James Gunn’s desire to rejuvenate the DCU. Concerning the script, the declarations of the CEO of DC Studios are rave:
(The film) has a completely different and unique take on a superheroine. (Ana Nogueria, screenwriter) came to present the story of Supergirl to me, and It was one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard.and she immediately wrote it. She came up with a first version that was excellent, and it just kept getting better. Craig (Gillespie, the director) was incredibly easy to work with, and I can’t wait for the film to come out.
Filming will begin in January 2025 in the United Kingdom, We should therefore quickly have the first images!
Lanterns
Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) will be the two headliners of Lanternsa new series produced by HBO, Warner Bros. and DC Studios. The plot will see this duo of intergalactic cops drawn into a dark earthly mystery during a murder investigation in the USA. James Gunn made no secret of his excitement about working with Aaron Pierre:
(He’s) someone I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. People don’t know it, but he almost played the role of Adam Warlock (In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3). He’s an extraordinary actor, and I’ve admired him since the start of his career. Seeing him read (the script) with Kyle was one of those miraculous moments. I don’t care what they say, I love that they say it together. (…) It’s a much more down to earth series, a very real series, which is strange to say about a series about les Green Lanterns. More it will be something no one has ever seen before.
Peacemaker Season 2
Forget the first season: according to James Gunn, the continuation is “very different“and will be”very magicale” ! Although he already has a showrunner role, he himself directed two episodes, including the first. According to him, Greg Mottola, director of Superbad et Nobody Wants This“directed two of the best episodes of Peacemaker (episodes 2 and 3)”. As for John Cena, he is full of praise for him: “honestly, I’ve never seen anyone improve so much (as actor) in such a short time. He was great in the first season. This season he’s mastered it and he’s incredible.”
