The 5000 note was auctioned for a record almost 26 million CZK

Prague – A Czechoslovak five-thousand note from 1919 was auctioned today in Prague for CZK 25.68 million. It thus became the most expensive Czech paper currency sold at a domestic auction. The previous record was held by the perforated version of the same banknote, which was sold in 2020 for 14.52 million crowns. Bankovky.com, which auctioned the currency for its client, informed about the result of the auction today in a press release.

The 5000 note, which neither the Czech National Bank nor the National Museum owns, went to today’s auction with a starting price of 2.5 million crowns. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that only two surviving pieces are known, both in private collections.

“The banknote was in circulation for less than two years. It was, of course, of a high nominal value. In addition, the red five-thousand note belongs to the most collectible issue of the First Republic from 1919,” said the co-owner of the Bankovky.com auction company Aleš Kohout.

The banknote auction will continue on Saturday on the LiveBid platform. A total of 1,508 items are on offer with a total starting value of five million crowns, the organizing company Bankovky.com said today
