The Acolyte has finally solved an old mystery about Star Wars lightsabers

The Acolyte unveils an old mystery

In episode 8 of The AcolyteOsha learns that Sol has lied to her his entire life, regarding the events that took place in Brendok, and that he is responsible for the death of her mother, Aniseya. In a moment of intense anger, she then decides to kill Sol, without any weapon, by strangling him with the Force (Hello Darth Vader).

Osha then retrieves Sol’s broken lightsaber and manages to make it work again. But this time, the light produced is no longer blue, like that of the Jedi, but red, synonymous with the Sith.

This sequence, which may seem innocuous, was nevertheless long-awaited by fans. The instantaneous creation of red lightsabers is one of the mysteries of Star Warsmentioned many times, but never shown on screen in a live-action.

The Acolyte thus acts as a pioneer in the representation of this key element. It should be noted that outside of the so-called “canonical” works, a similar sequence had, for example, been seen in the video game Star Wars : Jedi Survivor, with the character of Dagan Gera.

The famous “bleeding” explained

This scene from The Acolyte explains a process already well known in the lore: the « bleeding ». According to Wookiepediathis notion implies that, in order to transform a lightsaber into red, one must first seize a weapon belonging to a Jedi, defeated in combat. This precision is important because it explains why Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber did not immediately transform into red when he went to the dark side, in Revenge of the Sith : he used his own saber well.

Then, the Kyber crystal that composes it must be infused with all of its pain, anger, and hatred, to bend it to its will. The crystal will then be corrupted, aligned with the dark side of the Force, and “bleeding” a power that has turned red.

Thanks to the new elements brought by The Acolyte, fans estimate that to become red, a crystal must first break, as is the case for Sol’s, but above all that it must belong to another Jedi, killed previously.

Will Osha keep Sol’s transformed lightsaber, or will she use the crystal to make her own? Hopefully we’ll get the answer in a future season 2, as The Acolyte unfortunately has not not yet been renewed by Disney+.
