The age of physical media for consoles is over

Approaching the holidays, Microsoft renewed its game console product line. Virtually the only novelty of the new Xboxes is that the optical drives have disappeared, thus the Redmond company, following the example of Sony, is placing more and more emphasis on online content distribution.

Optical drives, along with the physical media (initially CD/DVD and later Blu-ray discs) have practically been an integral part of Sony and Microsoft consoles since the beginning, i.e. they formed, Sony was the first to break with the decade-old model in 2020, when the PS5 console was launched without an optical drive (digital edition).

After four years, the PlayStation 5 Pro, which will hit stores in the coming weeks, will not contain an optical drive from the start, although such a unit can be purchased for an additional fee.

However, the new Xboxes differ from previous versions not only in terms of the optical drive. Austin Evans based on his video, the manufacturer has redesigned the motherboard of the units, and the system processor is now manufactured using a 6nm process, and the cooling system has also been transformed in parallel.
