The AM5 socket may stay until 2027

In a positive development for those of you who have invested in AM5 motherboards, or plan to, AMD has officially extended the platform’s support until at least 2027. This means a two-year extension from the previous “2025+” time window that the company communicated in late 2022.

The AM4 is a real long-hauler, and the AM5 looks set to be too.

AMD has kept the AM4 socket alive with new CPU releases, but since 2020 it has been about repackages of previous Ryzen processors, rather than brand new products. Despite this, AMD’s focus on keeping the AM5 platform alive for a long time makes it easier to recommend for enthusiasts who regularly upgrade their processors.

The extension of AM5 platform support until 2027 is definitely good news for AMD fans. It provides longer life and more value for those who have invested in, or plan to invest in, AM5 motherboards and components. Whether AM5 will be as long-lived a story as AM4 remains to be seen. With the changes happening on the processor front right now, with more focus on AI additions, there is a risk that there will be a slightly shorter life cycle for AM5. Regardless, the red team processors seem the way to go if you plan to stick with one processor socket for an extended period.

The next wave of new Ryzen processors is the recently announced Ryzen 9000 series which will be launched at the end of July.
