The American adventure of Medical Z

From the treatment of severe burn victims to thoracic and visceral surgery… Medical Z, founded in 1981 by André Zagamé, is experiencing strong growth thanks to the American market and plastic surgery. “Originally, my father developed, at the request of plastic surgeons, an industrial method to design compression garments for military burn patients, like a custom-made elastic second skin,” explains Yann Zagamé, the son of the founder and CEO of the SME established since 2003 in Saint-Avertin (Indre-et-Loire).

Since 1986, clothing facilitating postoperative healing designed by Medical Z has also been aimed at the reconstructive and cosmetic surgery market. A niche in which the SME (11.5 million euros turnover in 2023, 90 employees) has flourished, in particular thanks to its establishment in the United States.

It was in 1993 that it set out to conquer the American market. “We first opened a small factory in Seattle, then another in 1996 in Texas, specifies the CEO. From Touraine, we cover Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and from Houston, the United States, Central and South America and Oceania.” Medical Z regularly invests to improve its cutting and assembly tools and production techniques.

“The objective is to produce better and faster, knowing that our activity remains manufacturing,” explains Yann Zagamé. In order to strengthen its growth, Medical Z is diversifying into adjacent businesses: “We make post-liposuction belts for plastic surgery, which can be used in visceral surgery, and ranges of underwear such as post-mastectomy bras.” By focusing on innovation to develop products for thoracic and visceral surgery and by adapting to local regulations and surgical techniques, the SME intends to consolidate its growth of around 8% per year.
