Sydney – American tennis players won the United Cup, a mixed team competition, after two years. The semi-final winners of the Czech national team beat Poland in today’s final in Sydney already after singles. The decisive second point was won by Taylor Fritz, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6:4, 5:7, 7:6 and followed the triumph of Coco Gauff, who defeated Iga Šwiateková 6:4, 6:4. The final mixed doubles was no longer played.
The Americans dominated the team competition for the second time in history, they also triumphed in the premier year 2022/23. The Poles, who defeated the Czech tennis players in the basic group, failed in the final for the second time in a row. Last year they lost 1:2 to Germany in the title match.
The number one ranked Americans were brought closer to victory in the opening singles by last year’s US Open winner Gauff, who defeated the five-time Grand Slam winner Šwiatek in almost two hours. She defeated the former world number one only for the third time out of 14 mutual matches. The 20-year-old Gauff followed up her semi-final victory over Karolína Muchová and did not lose a set even in the fifth match at the United Cup.
The American triumph was sealed by the fourth player in the world, Fritz, who defeated Hurkacz in two hours and 18 minutes. Not even 17 aces helped the Polish opponent. Fritz won the first set thanks to a break in the fifth game. In the second set, Hurkacz broke the American’s serve in the 12th game and equalized, but the end of the match was better for the opponent. Fritz won the decisive tie-break 7:4 and could celebrate with his teammates.
