Apple devices are declared “vintage” when 5 years have passed since they have stopped being marketed
The Apple Watch Series 4 takes a step towards obsolescence after being declared as a vintage product by Apple. This means that within two years the Apple smartwatch will be considered an obsolete device and will no longer receive support for repairs. At least, officially.
During the year 2024, Apple added 12 Mac computers to its list of obsolete and vintage products, declared the iPhone 5s obsolete, and established three iconic products as vintage devices: the iPhone X, the original HomePod, and the first-generation AirPods.
The Apple Watch Series 4 was announced in the month of September 2018 and it stopped distributing in 2019 with the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 5.
Rest in peace, the Apple Watch Series 4 is already a vintage product
What does it mean for an Apple product to be declared vintage? It is a name used by the Californian firm and that implies that more than 5 years have passed since a product stopped being distributed. A vintage product is still supported for hardware replacement and repairs.
When 7 years pass since an Apple electronic device has stopped being distributed, it becomes a obsolete productwhich means that Apple will stop providing technical support for an iPhone model or another range of products in its catalog. That is, the Apple Store will no longer offer hardware repairs for that device.
Now a new year has begun and Apple has not waited long to declare its first vintage product of 2025. The Apple Watch Series 4 and all its variants including the 40mm and 44mm aluminum and steel versions are now considered vintage in the product catalog and will accompany Apple’s list of vintage and obsolete iPhone models.
The entry on the scene of the Apple Watch Series 4 marked a before and after in Apple’s smart watch category with a big redesign which featured larger screens, thinner bezels, and rounded corners.
After the official launch of watchOS 11, the Apple Watch Series 4 no longer received support for Apple software updates. Its latest update is watchOS 10.
Additionally, Apple has also included the 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro to the list of vintage products. It was the last MacBook Pro with a 15-inch screen, the next generation laptops featured a larger 16-inch screen. Although in this case, the 15-inch MacBook Pro is still compatible with the latest macOS software updates.
So from now on the Apple Watch Series 4 is already a “vintage” product, as Apple likes to say. Within two years it will pass away, being officially declared an obsolete product. That will be when the company with the bitten apple logo stopped offering technical support for this historic Apple Watch.
