The Association for Mental Health of Baix Llobregat Nord held a talk-colloquium this Tuesday to talk about Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). He did it as part of the World Mental Health Day event schedule, in an event open to all publics that was held at the Francesc Pujols Library. The psychologist of ITL Limit Xero Gasol and some witnesses have participated, who have shared first-person experiences.
The aim of the event was to give the population a close and real view of what it means to live and coexist with Borderline Personality Disorder (BLD). One of the most disabling mental health problems out there, but at the same time one of the most unknown.
As described by Víctor Munner, an educator from the organizing body, the meeting offered “a deep view of TLP, to educate the public to reduce stigma and provide tools to improve coexistence and support for affected people”.

Munner highlighted the presence of psychologist Xero Gasol, a professional in the sector “with extensive experience in BPD and people who suffer from the disorder”. His intervention, together with that of the witnesses, has served to explain “lives, experiences, challenges, self-care strategies and how emotional and social support has an impact on improvement and recovery”.
An appointment to talk about BPD, a mental disorder “that affects the way a person sees and experiences the world. It is characterized by emotional instability, unstable interpersonal relationships, problems with one’s own identity and uncontrolled impulses, among others”, enumerates the educator. He adds that he has “variable symptoms, it depends on each person: with sudden mood changes, difficulties in regulating emotions, intense fears of abandonment, impossibility in behavior and sometimes self-destructive thoughts and behaviors”.
Regarding the moment of appearance, he explains that “it generally begins to manifest itself at the end of adolescence and early adulthood, although symptoms can appear later, when diagnoses tend to be much more precise.”

There is no single profile of a person more prone to the disorder, but “a childhood trauma, neglect or abuse can generate more possibilities of developing it. Equally, biological and genetic factors can also influence”, points out Munner.

The most hopeful message towards BPD is that “it has a high percentage of recovery or improvement. With treatment and support, significant improvement and greater emotional stability is possible, and a balanced life can be achieved with the right support.”
In recent years, the Association has been doing “a very important job in teaching and understanding the TDP because there is much more awareness and social awareness. But there is still a long way to go, to reduce the stigma”. Munner calls for “more public resources and more professional training” and that we all “give him a voice”.

The Association for Mental Health of Baix Llobregat Nord has been working in this line for almost a quarter of a century: “next year we will be 25 years providing mental health support”, points out Munner, who encourages everyone to receive “information , advice and guidance by calling 676 71 11 50 or email associacio@salutmentalblln.org. We hold free meetings and are available to anyone who needs us to provide mental health support.”
