Winter and the cold are slowly approaching. This means a reduced immune system and increased spread and transmission of infections. Why the risk of infection is greater during the winter months depends on 1177 that viruses spread more easily in dry and cold air rather than in warm and humid air, and that we become more susceptible to viruses when it is cold.

The call: “Reduce the risk of serious illness and death”
The Public Health Authority writes in a press release that the spread of covid-19 has increased since August and is at a higher level than before. The spread, like the flu, is only expected to increase and therefore vaccinations are important. It is particularly important for people in risk groups because vaccines reduce the risk of serious illness and death.
Despite the serious risks, many have so far not accepted the call for vaccination.
– Just over half of those aged 80 or older have been vaccinated during the autumn. In order for more people to receive good protection when the virus spreads the most, we urge everyone who is 65 years of age or older or who belongs to another risk group to accept the offer of vaccination against covid-19 and influenza, says head of unit Tina Crafordat the Public Health Agency in the press release.

The risk groups who are encouraged to vaccinate
On The Public Health Authority website lists the medical conditions that mean an increased risk of suffering from serious corona infection. People with the following medical conditions are advised to get vaccinated.
- Cardiovascular disease including stroke (hypertension as the only diagnosis is not included)
- Chronic lung disease such as COPD or severe unstable asthma
- Diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure
- Immunosuppression due to treatment, organ transplantation, blood cancer disease or other immunosuppressive disease/condition, e.g. Down syndrome.
- Diseases or conditions that lead to impaired lung function or impaired cough force and secretion stagnation (for example, extreme obesity, neuromuscular diseases or a multifunction impairment).
- Pregnancy (after week 12 of pregnancy). For pregnant women who have an additional risk factor, vaccination can also take place before the 13th week of pregnancy.
- Other illness or condition that has caused impaired health in a way that puts covid-19 at risk of having a serious course. Examples of such diseases or conditions can be dementia, mental illness or harmful alcohol or drug use, which has caused impaired physical health.
