Joe Biden signed 50 bills into law on Christmas Eve. Thus, the bald eagle, although a symbol of the United States for a very long time, received official recognition as the national bird, according to Interesting Engineering.

US President Joe Biden has signed into law Senate Bill 4610. Specifically, the bill adds a new section to Title 36 that officially designates the bald eagle as the nation’s national bird.

Before this bill was signed into law, although the bald eagle was widely recognized as a symbol of the nation and appeared on the Great Seal of the United States, there was no specific law officially naming it the national bird.

The Bald Eagle, a “Historic Symbol of the United States”

The bald eagle has been described as a “historic symbol of the United States, representing independence, strength, and freedom.”

The bill emphasized that the bald eagle is a bird native only to North America. It was chosen as the coat of arms for the USA in 1782.

In addition, the bald eagle continues to be a prominent symbol in all branches of the US military.
