The barometer that reveals an unexpected optimism of the Romanians

Six out of ten Romanians expect their level of well-being to increase this year, and two out of ten believe that it will remain the same, according to the latest edition of the UNSAR – IRES Barometer on risk perception and insurance culture in Romania.

Respondents mentioned among the factors with a significant contribution to personal well-being access to education (78% of respondents), emotional balance (72%), health status and a balanced lifestyle – nutrition, sports, free time, vacations, travel (70 %) etc., according to a statement from UNSAR.

“Health is an increasingly present concern in the lives of Romanians, even if, often, we allow ourselves to be absorbed by everyday problems. We aim to contribute to better informing the general public about the risks we are exposed to and how we can manage them – which is why UNSAR will launch a communication platform/public policy think tank: the Alliance for Well-Being”, he said Alexandru Ciuncan, president & general director of UNSAR, quoted in the press release.

The growing interest of Romanians regarding the state of well-being is also reflected by the evolution of voluntary health insurance – this being the segment that recorded one of the most sustained developments at the level of the voluntary insurance industry. Practically, in 2023, health insurance increased by 21.5% compared to the previous year, and the gross indemnities paid by insurers based on these policies increased even more, by 27%, the cited source emphasizes.

“In various unforeseen situations, voluntary health or life insurance helps to maintain a financial balance in case of accidents, illnesses and more. All of these can have important negative effects on our families and can significantly affect our well-being or quality of life. However, difficult periods can be overcome more easily by resorting to the protection and benefits of insurance”, stated Roxana Băluţă, Life and Health Insurance specialist & UNSAR program coordinator.

The “Risk perception and insurance culture in Romania” barometer was carried out in May this year, at the request of UNSAR, on a representative sample of 1,010 respondents, aged between 18 and 50, using the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone) method Interviewing).

Founded in 1994, UNSAR – the National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies from Romania represents 21 profile companies. They have a share of over 90% of the local insurance market. The objective of UNSAR’s activity is to defend and represent the interests of Romanian insurers and reinsurers, to participate in the improvement of the legislative framework in the field of insurance, to promote the insurance activity in Romania and the sustainable development of the profile industry on a domestic and international level. Since 2007, UNSAR is a full member of the Federation of European Insurers and Reinsurers – Insurance Europe.

Insurance represents a key sector of the Romanian economy, contributing to its development. Insurers in Romania pay compensation of EUR 5.2 million every calendar day, UNSAR states.
