The Rautavaara game management association carried out a bear repelling task (SRVA task) in Rautavaara Marjomäentie on Sunday 15 September 2024, when the beehives located in the yard area had already attracted the bear to the yard for several days. The police had decided to evict the bear on Saturday.
Suurriistavirka-apu, or SRVA operators, caught the bear, which had visited the yard during the morning, about 600 meters from the yard, and started the bear’s expulsion measures with two driving dogs. However, the adult bear was not willing to move ahead of the dogs, and killed the plot tracking dog used in the task.
The SRVA operators continued to manage the expulsion task with another dog, and finally the bear was released. The expulsion mission ended in the afternoon about 5.5 km from the starting point.
The public has recently discussed the insurance coverage of SRVA operators. In this damage situation, insurance coverage comes through Hunter’s Insurance. The hunter’s insurance covers the damage caused to the insured hunting dog in a big-game rescue mission. If the dog dies during the task, the insurance will cover the value of the dog at the time of the damage. If necessary, the value of the dog at the time of injury is determined by the Finnish Kennel Association.
