Are you going on a road trip to Germany? See here where you can find the country’s most beautiful sandy beaches and most attractive islands.

A different kind of holiday in Germany

Many Finnish tourists go to Germany primarily for a city vacation, but the versatile country also surprises summer vacationers with its wonderful beaches. Especially on a car trip, it is easy to go to the coast if the weather is favorable.

In Germany, you should explore the charming islands of the North Sea, which offer Central European beach idyll at its best.

German beaches have a funny characteristic beach chair, German beach chair, which literally means beach basket. You can open and close the basket depending on how much protection you want.

In terms of weather, the best time for a beach holiday is July and August, but you should take into account the August traffic jams brought by the European holiday season. In Germany, the weather is usually warmer than in Finland, also in early summer and autumn.

1. Sylti island

Sylt is the largest of the German North Sea islands, and in the summer it attracts all kinds of tourists, from families with children to couples and groups of friends.

There are several different beaches on the island, the most beautiful of which is Kampen, bordered by red cliffs. In addition to beach vacations, Kampen also has options for travelers looking for nightlife or golfing opportunities. Don’t miss the picturesque scenery of the Kampen lighthouse either.

You can travel to the island of Sylt either by ferry or alternatively by flying from German cities. Ferry passengers can also bring their own car with them if they wish.

2. Rügen – Germany’s largest island

Rügen in the Baltic Sea is the largest of all the German islands in terms of area. Known for its long white sandy beaches, Rügen’s landmarks include the decorative pier called Sellin.

A vacation in Rügen should also be combined with, for example, a trip to the Jasmund National Park, which is especially known for its limestone cliffs. For example, you can cycle and hike in the national park, and rare bird species can also be found there.

During the times of the GDR, Rügen was a popular holiday destination among East Germans. The island also has a dark history from the German Nazi era – one of the most famous examples is the barren-looking resort of Prora.

You can get from Berlin to Rügen by car, train or bus. There is a ferry and bridge connection to the island from the mainland.

3. Berliners’ favorite beach

You don’t always need the sea for your favorite beach – sometimes a lake is enough. Berliners and tourists who spend time in Berlin also know it, who head to the Wannsee beach in droves during the summer months.

The lake is a classic sunbathing and swimming spot, which was opened to visitors as early as 1907. The more than one kilometer long sandy beach can accommodate up to 30,000 sun worshipers at its best.

Travemünde is also a familiar destination for many Finnish tourists, as there is a ship route to the port city from Helsinki. Travemünde doesn’t have to be seen as just a gateway to Germany, because you can also stay in the area for a beach holiday.

A tourist coming to Travemünde should remember the name Timmendorfer Strand, which is well suited as a beach destination for the whole family.
