The Darlington Public School in Australia Of fjcstudio was awarded the title of World Building of the Year 2024 al World Architecture Festival (Waf) 2024the seventeenth edition of which was celebrated in Singapore in recent days.
Focused on inclusive learning, Darlington Public School, in the Sydney suburb of Chippendale, has a strong connection to Aboriginal people. For example, there are many on display throughout the school Aboriginal artwork to preserve the country’s stories for future generations. It has numerous facilities open to the public including the community room, outdoor learning area, library, community garden.

Alessandro Rossi of fjcstudio thus commented on the victory, obtained out of over 220 projects by unanimous decision of the jury chaired by Sonali Rastogi and composed, among others, of Mario Cucinella and Ian Ritchie: “AND a very humble architecture given the modest scale of the building: it is a small school project (…). The real winners are the children who will spend time in the building, a place of enrichment for many years to come.”

The prize World Interior of the Year instead he went to the studio’s Pang Mei Noodle Bar Lfs in China Office Aio dal playful and experimental design. The prize Future Project of the Year was assigned to Küçükçekmece in Türkiye, signed by the Istanbul studio Eaa-Emre Arolat Architecture (in the photo below). The building is organized as a series of interconnected fragmented structures and combines tradition with contemporary community needs, offering gathering spaces including a dining room and worship areas.

The prize Landscape of the Year was won by the Regeneration of Vitality project in Shenzhen Guanlan Riverside Plaza in China Lay-out Planning Consultants. The project reshaped an open space through different activities responding to the characterless rapid urbanization the city is undergoing. There were also numerous special prizes, such as the small project of the year which went to typical Japanese architecture Fushi di Tezuka Architects.

For its eighteenth edition, the World Architecture Festival 2025 will be in Miami for the first time, from 12 to 14 November. Which projects will win?
