The best-selling cars in September 2024, the ranking by fuel

The car market in Italy continues to lose ground. After the double-digit drop in August, cars registered in September were 121,666 or 10.7% less compared to the same period in 2023. In the first nine months of the year the market growth is therefore just 2,1%with a total of 1,202,122 units (-18.1% compared to pre-pandemic levels).

Looking at the performance of the Groups and individual brands, the -33.9% of Stellantiswhose brands all posted negative results in September. Citroen lost more than anyone else (-74.52%) together with Lancia (-72.16%) and Alfa Romeo (-12.57%) registered 1,912 units, less than Tesla (1,949 units, +115.12%).

UNRAE therefore reiterated to the Government the urgency of an intervention to revive the sector, which is also suffering due to the weak demand for electric cars; a problem, the latter, which also concerns the rest of Europe, which is why the National Union of Foreign Motor Vehicle Representatives believes that “a clear definition of the European strategy for the future of the automotive sector is necessary”.

More precisely, in the note that comments on the data on registrations in Italy in September 2024, UNRAE underlines the urgency of a refinancing of incentives for the 0-20 g/km range (with the 240 million euros of residual funds) and considers a revision of the tax treatment of company cars.

The best-selling power supplies

As anticipated, the electric cars in September they recorded a double-digit increase compared to 2023 (+29%), positioning themselves at 5.2% of the total, but we are still talking about very low volumes: from 4,989 to 6,437 units.

Plug-in hybrids lost 25.5% in the month, reaching a 3.4% share (from 5,553 to 4,136 units) and hybrid they remained rather stable (from 54,792 to 53,975, -1.5%). The petrol cars fell by 23% (from 40,600 units in 2023 to 31,260), stopping at 25.4% share and the diesel they lost 27.3% (from 21,493 units to 15,634 units; the market share stopped at 12.7%).

The car a GPL have gained 2.9% (from 11,121 units to 11,447) and methane ones, however, have fallen even further: from 99 to 9 units in the month (-90.9%), with a market share now of 0 ,0%.
