Although his career ended a few years ago, Germany’s NBA icon Dirk Nowitzki still enjoys enormous popularity. However, little is known about the private life of the now 46-year-old from Würzburg. Until now: In an exclusive interview with RTL, Nowitzki opened up about Super Bowl winner Sebastian Vollmer.
In Dallas, Vollmer (winner of Super Bowl XLIX) and Nowitzki (2011 NBA champion and Hall of Fame Class of 2023) met for a conversation at eye level.
Especially the former NBA star Dirk Nowitzki RTL rare private insights – but of course also talked about the basketball hype in Germany.
“Of course I follow the national team. It started at the home European Championships when we won bronze,” Nowitzki remembered. His highlight so far: “The World Cup title was of course incredible.”
The DBB selection sees the living legend of the Dallas Mavericks at its zenith: “We have a super tough generation. This is the best team we’ve ever had. It’s really fun to watch.”
However, he wasn’t really involved himself, noted Nowitzki: “I’m of course in contact with some players, especially with Dennis Schröder, who plays here in America. And with a few others too. But I’m really involved Not at the DBB.”
Nowitzki’s children make “jokes” about their celebrity dad
Probably also because Nowitzki devoted himself primarily to his family after retiring from his career in 2019. He and his wife Jessica have a daughter and two sons.
Nowitzki’s children know how prominent their dad is. “They’ve now understood it. When we go to the Dallas Mavericks game together, of course my children also see my statue and then make their jokes,” smiled the Würzburg native.
But there was also shame involved. “My eldest daughter used to be really uncomfortable. When I took her to school, she would ask me to stay outside. She also started crying once when I was asked to take pictures. She’s just a bit more shy. “
Just like their father, Nowitzki’s kids are also active in sports – but not in basketball. “They all play tennis, the boys still play soccer, our daughter still does gymnastics and volleyball. But in tennis everyone is involved and plays tournaments. They do it quite well and it’s fun,” revealed the 2011 NBA champion.
Soon there will be contemplative days together again. “We continue to celebrate Christmas on December 24th, not on December 25th as is usual in the USA. My wife and I both grew up that way, we make a big meal and then we give presents,” Nowitzki gave insight into the family traditions.
