The best video of this year was created thanks to AI. The creator reveals a secret

Artificial intelligence kills creativity? On the contrary – AI brings it to a new level.

Fans of the Polish rap scene have reason to be happy. After years of absence, Quebonafide has returned, and is considered by many to be the best rapper of the current generation – and if not the best, then certainly the most original. The artist unexpectedly published a new song before the weekend, which at the time of writing has already reached 2 million plays. We are delighted not with the music itself, but with the video, which was largely generated using AI. This is the best demonstration of the capabilities of artificial intelligence that I have seen recently.

A visual masterpiece – these tools were used to create the clip

AI is often said to kill creativity and suck the soul out of the creative process – any critics who say so should watch the clip below. It was created by not just anyone, but Andrzej Dragan himself.

Dragan is a great Polish physicist, photographer, filmmaker and writer, distinguished by his passion for surrealist stylistics. You may recognize him, among other things, from his best-selling book Quantechism, or a human cagewhich enjoys fantastic reviews from readers. He is a man of many talents, which he proved during cooperation with the Polish rapper. Andrzej Dragan used a whole range of AI tools to produce the clip.

We entry on X revealed that all graphic backgrounds were generated using Midjourney. As for shots and transitions, they were developed thanks to Runway, Luma and Stable Diffusion. The clip also included a lot of spectacular deefakes – they were created using specially trained GANs (Generative Adversarial Network), a type of artificial neural network.

One laptop and one day of work

Watching the new Quebonafide video, you might think that creating such a complicated project requires a lot of time. Nothing could be further from the truth – thanks to AI, the team responsible for the video was able to complete the photos in one day. Post-production took the longest – Dragan revealed that the work lasted from June to October. Of course, not everything is the work of AI, but it was thanks to artificial intelligence that it was possible to shoot a clip in one studio, instead of tedious searching for perfect locations. In another entry, Andrzej Dragan reports that Disney used similar procedures in the production of The Mandalorian, with the difference that the Unreal Engine was used instead of Midjourney.

Midjourney saved us from having to shoot in 10 locations, which we had neither time nor money for. As a result, the location scout could have dropped out of the team and we could have locked ourselves in the studio instead of traveling around Europe with the plan. – Andrzej Dragan

The best thing, however, is that thanks to AI, virtually all activities could be performed on a laptop – more specifically, a MacBook Pro with an M3 Max chip and 128 GB of RAM. However, we must remember that the very fact of such a wide use of artificial intelligence does not mean the simplicity of the process itself – we should not look at it through the prism of lazily entering prompts and watching how the work is created by itself. It is still a very complicated process, requiring not only extensive knowledge, but also a sublime sense of aesthetics.
