BarcelonaThe Court of Girona has sentenced the three police officers from Santa Coloma de Farners (la Selva) to terms of between 9 and 10 years in prison, accused of trafficking in confiscated marijuana. This is the biggest case of police corruption in the Mossos d’Esquadra body, according to the prosecutor during the trial. The officers – one of them a corporal – have been convicted of crimes against public health, membership of a criminal group, continued theft and falsification of an official document.
The highest sentence is for the corporal, who was operational chief of the public health section’s investigative group and considered the leader of the plot, with 10 years and nine months in prison. For the agent who acted as an intermediary, the sentence dictates a sentence of 10 years and one month, and for the third defendant, 9 years and nine months. Two other defendants were also involved, a non-police couple who were responsible for distributing the drug. In his case, the woman was acquitted, but the court sentenced the man to two years and three months in prison.
During the trial, an attempt was made to clarify whether the three young men conspired to steal marijuana confiscated in police operations and then sell it through the marriage also on trial. On the first day of the trial, the police’s defenses tried to annul the investigation on them by questioning the protocol that was followed when another trafficker – who is not accused in this case – betrayed them. This third party alerted the Internal Affairs Division (DAI) of the Mossos d’Esquadra to an alleged plot of police corruption, but, according to the defense, in that confession the trafficker explained that a corporal was charging him money in exchange for don’t stop him That questioning was given to him as a witness, and once he self-incriminated, Internal Affairs agents did not stop the statement to offer him the possibility of having a lawyer defend him from that point on.
