The decision comes after local experts found the flight data recorder too damaged to be analyzed in South Korea.
Joo Jong-wan, South Korea’s deputy civil aviation minister, explained that the analysis will be done in collaboration with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The second black box, which contains the voice recordings from the cockpit, has already been partially analyzed locally, and the preliminary data is being converted into audio format.
The flight data recorder, which has a missing connector, requires specialized expertise to extract the information. This black box could provide crucial details about the last moments of the flight and help identify the exact cause of the tragedy.
“We agreed today that it will be transported to the United States to be analyzed in collaboration with the US National Transportation Safety Board,” said the South Korean official, AFP notes.
