The Boyswhich mixes gore, politics and superheroes, has just unveiled the last episode of season 4, on Prime Video. Here is everything you need to know about this explosive finale.
Bloody, grating, ironic and gory as desired: The Boys has never done things by halves since its debut, 5 years ago. While the last episode of season 4 has just been uploaded to Prime Videothis July 18, 2024, the series still has some nice surprises in store for its upcoming season 5. Here are 9 decisive elements of the season 4 finale.
Warning, this article contains spoilers for season 4 of The Boys, and especially on episode 8.
Episode 8 of The Boys changed name after attack on Trump
In this season 4, The Boys now asserts forcefully, and without any subtlety, one of its main messages: a fierce criticism of Donald Trump. In episode 8, the series even parodies his famous slogan « Make America Great Again »with a « Make America Strong Again, Make America Super Again ». Homelander, the terrifying character who looks just like the former President of the United States, actually gains access to the White House in this finale.
But reality has caught up with fiction, to the point that The Boys had to add a warning before watching this last episode, and also shared a press release on social networks. This final chapter of season 4 features an assassination attempt against the President of the United States. A situation that obviously echoes the recent attack suffered by Donald Trump. The episode, which was originally to be called « Assassination Run » has thus become more soberly “Season 4 Finale”.
Butcher does have a power
The least we can say is that Butcher has always hated superheroes from the bottom of his being. Determined to eliminate them to the last one, the leader of the Boys was nevertheless forced to inject himself several times with Compound V, thus giving him temporary powers in season 3. But this decision is not without consequences, since Butcher suffers from a major brain tumor, which causes him hallucinations and could well lead to his death.
Almost dying in episode 8, he miraculously gets up and finally reveals his power, teased throughout this penultimate season: huge monstrous arms come out of his torso, capable of cutting anyone in two. Beyond the appetizing (or not) aspect of these new abilities, this sequence establishes Butcher as the real villain, which he may have always been. Will he finally be the main antagonist of season 5, alongside Homelander, before dying from his illness?
Victoria Neuman and Grace Mallory are dead
The two protagonists, who had a central role in the series, passed away. The first was killed by Butcher, cut in two by his power, while the second was propelled by Ryan, who refuses to train to kill his father, Homelander. He then flees, suggesting that he could switch to the dark side and become a reduced model, just as dangerous, of his father.
Sage controlled everything from the beginning
The superheroine, endowed with rare intelligence, had been suddenly sent away by Homelander in episode 7. But this last chapter of season 4 proves to us that she had planned everything from the beginning. Her plan was indeed to kill Victoria Neuman, whom Sage considers too smart and stubborn to be controlled at the head of the White House.
At the end of episode 8, she manages to place Homelander’s supporters in the Presidency. We thus understand that the superheroine has always acted in the shadows, and that she intends to put in place “phase 2” of his Machiavellian plan. Now that the Supes are firmly in power, we are a little afraid of what exactly the next events mean: an extermination of humans and the supreme domination of Homelander? Or the potential return of Maeve, who mysteriously appears on one of Sage’s notebooks? Answer with season 5.
Kimiko finally speaks
Mute since the beginning of the series, Kimiko has finally said her first words in a heartbreaking scene. While she has just kissed Frenchie, the latter is suddenly taken away by Homelander sympathizers. Prevented from acting by one of her enemies, Kimiko then manages to scream “Noooo”while his beloved is taken away. Come back to us Frenchie!
Starlight has regained her powers…
During season 4, the character of Starlight (or Annie January) gradually lost the use of her powers, linked to electricity. A situation probably caused by her personal life, completely turned upside down after the public revelation of her abortion, and the overall chaotic context of the country.
But in episode 8, the superheroine regains her abilities, managing to escape, while Hughie is captured by Homelander’s government. His power, which now allows him to fly, should be central to the plot of season 5.
…And Ashley will probably develop some
In episode 8, Homelander’s team, including Black Noir and The Deep, kill many Vought employees. Ashley, who sees the danger coming, then decides to inject herself with Compound V, out of desperation. The sequence ends as the product seems to take effect.
Will she return in season 5 with new powers? If so, which side will she join, between Homelander’s Supes who have always tormented her, and the Boys?
Characters from Gen V appear in The Boys
Gen Vthe spin-off series of The Boyshas always had very close ties with her elder sister, with cameos galore in both directions. In episode 8, two key characters, who have become antagonists, come to stop Kimiko and Frenchie.
It is Sam Riordanwith superhuman strength, and Cate Dunlapwho masters telepathy. With this fleeting appearance at the end of the episode, we can obviously imagine that they could return in season 5 of The Boys.
Soldier Boy will make his big return in season 5
The main antagonist of season 3 had ended up exploding in mid-flight, along with Maeve. We suspected that Soldier Boy had not died so easily, considering his exceptional abilities, but radio silence had reigned since this final sequence.
The final scene of season 4 confirms that Homelander’s father will indeed be back for the final episodes. And this family duo could well be a real thorn in the side of the Boys. « Diabolical ! »as dear Butcher would say.
