The brightest moon of the year will “hover” over St. Petersburg today

The satellite will approach the Earth as close as possible.

St. Petersburg residents will see the brightest moon of the year. Residents of the city will be able to observe this rare phenomenon this coming night, the press service of the Moscow Planetarium clarified.

They explained that the full moon coincides with the moment the Moon passes the closest orbital point to the Earth – perigee. At this time, the satellite appears larger than during full moons, which coincide with the passage of the most distant point from the Earth – apogee. Now the objects are separated by 357,172 kilometers. It is specified that the satellite will enter the full moon phase on October 17 – from 14:28 Moscow time.

The Moon will be as close to the Earth as possible and will appear brighter – this light was previously used by indigenous tribes when hunting at night, so this one of the most spectacular astronomical events was nicknamed the “Hunter’s Moon”.
