Brno – People have the last opportunity to visit the premises of the former Prior near Brno Central Station tonight at the oldies party and all Saturday. The development company Crestyl, which bought the building and will demolish it in January, will also allow interested parties to buy smaller pieces of equipment from the interior of the brutalist building and parts of the concrete cladding as souvenirs at the end of November. The developer’s spokesman Ondřej Micka told journalists today.
While for tonight’s party you need to buy ticket for 150 crowns, the tour of the multimedia exhibition on Saturday is free. However, the capacity of individual half-hour tours is limited, people must reserve a place on the web.
“Tours of the multimedia exhibition, which will present the past and future form of Dornych through projections of historical records and visualizations, begin at 10:00 a.m. 50 people can register for each half hour,” said Micka.
People with the employee entrance from the bus stops in Úzká Street will get to the third floor, to the premises where there were warehouses on one side and a canteen for employees on the other. At 11:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m., architectural historian Šárka Svobodová will present the history and interesting facts about the building of the former Priory.
The building is already empty at the moment, all the vendors have finished with October and cleared the premises. The developer is gradually liquidating smaller buildings around Prior itself, then the main demolition will begin in January.
The very last public event associated with the building before its demolition will be a “public market” on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1. In the area of the supply yard in Úzká street, interior parts of equipment will be offered for sale – from fire extinguishers, to various types of lighting and sanitary items such as sinks and urinals, to speakers and air conditioning units. Their list is available in online catalog. For sale, the developer also offers larger built-in pieces of equipment, such as retractable metal blinds, interior doors or built-in ovens, but interested parties must arrange their purchase individually. Details including a list of the equipment on offer are available on the website dornych.cz.
Demolition of the building will begin in January, will be gradual and will last four months. The construction of the Nový Dornych project is to begin immediately afterwards. A partially covered public space and six buildings, the tallest of which will have eight floors, are to be created in the area next to the main station. The connection to the underpass under the main station and also the footbridge above Úzka Street will remain. There are to be 186 rental apartments in the new buildings, they will be complemented by 26,000 square meters of office space and 27,000 square meters of space intended for shops.
The building of the former Priory is one of the last representatives of the brutalist architectural style in Brno. It was completed in 1984 and is a fragment of the original, much larger project, which covered the entire area south of the Grand bus station and included the relocation of the Brno main station. According to him, a large regional center with two department stores and a 22-storey business and service building was to be created. The project began in the 1960s, but after the arrival of Soviet troops in 1968, it was postponed, only a more modest version was created, and only the OD Prior was built.
