The call came from an unexpected place: Germany should play a bigger role in the war in Ukraine

A ZDF public service medium reported that the CDU Prime Minister of Saxony, as well as the expected Prime Minister of Thuringia, as well as the Social Democrat leader of Brandenburg, in a joint statement published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

called for Germany to assume a greater role in order to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible.

These are the provinces in which local legislative elections were held on the first and third Sundays of September. In Saxony, the conservative Michael Kretschmer’s party, the CDU, narrowly beat the radical right-wing AfD, and in Thuringia, the far-right party won, and the CDU led by Mario Vogts came in second. And in Brandenburg, the Social Democrat Dietmar Woidke retained his position as Prime Minister for seven years.

According to ZDF, the joint call was made in Berlin to say the least”reluctantly” was welcomed by the leaders of both the CDU and the SPD, above all, because they were not even informed about it.

We would like Germany to assume a more active diplomatic role, in close cooperation with its European partners and neighbors

– said the signatories.

In addition to the topic of the Russian war in Ukraine, in the joint article they indirectly expressed their reservations regarding the planned stationing of American medium-range missiles in Germany. They expressed the view that this decision was not properly discussed.

According to ZDF, the “three gentlemen” actually did what Sahra Wagenknecht demanded of them. And all this because he wants to remain prime minister, or wants to be one – the deputy head of the Budapest studio of the public service medium assessed the joint call. Neither the leaders of the CDU nor the SPD have yet taken a position regarding the letter or ZDF’s assumption.
