The Capital Housing Agency is six months old, and new residents have moved into only three apartments

The aim of the program is to increase the number of affordable sublets. Compared to market prices, you can get apartments 30 percent cheaper, the owners get 15 percent less, and the housing agency gives the other 15 percent as a subsidy to tenants.

Deputy Mayor Ambrus Kiss said that tenants have moved into three apartments so far. The program is primarily open to public service workers, including employees of Budapest hospitals.

There is no doubt that demand has been subdued for the time being, but only a few months have passed since the start of the program, and the real estate market stagnates in the summer anyway

– said Ambrus Kiss. He added that the owners mainly offer one-room studios, which does not suit the target group.

According to the deputy mayors, there is interest in the program from all over Budapest. Expensive apartments are rejected, as they would be unaffordable for those eligible. Ambrus Kiss criticized the government: “There would be EU funds for the program that we could call, but the cabinet has not been able to issue the call until now.”

With the autumn campaign, I want to reach potential landlords.

He mentioned the transformation of the housing agency into an independent company as a long-term plan, if they manage to let out at least 50-100 properties.
