The electric carsthanks to the absence of numerous mechanical parts typical of combustion models, allow the development of completely new systems that were unthinkable in the past. Many manufacturers are developing some, such as the one that allows the car to to spin on itself. Like a tank.
A system already seen for example on the electric Mercedes G-Class and under study by Stellantis which, at the beginning of 2023, filed a patent application in the United States. Here’s how it works.
Just one button
The patent provides for the use of a mechanical differential which allows the wheels to turn in opposite directions, thus creating a tank effect, to then turn on the spot. All this by mounting a motor for each wheel and not by braking one side or the other, as is done on tanks.

Drawings and technical specifications filed by Stellantis show how the functionality can be activated by acting on the central monitor, side levers or controls on the steering wheel. Everything would then happen as a classic turnsteering right or left and accelerating to increase speed.
