Apple has withdrawn from sale older iPhones that have a Lightning connector. This is due to an EU regulation that requires all smartphones to have USB-C. This regulation comes into effect today, Saturday, December 28, and we informed you about this plan in advance.
Apple has stopped selling older iPhones
Apple’s official online store has withdrawn the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and third-generation iPhone SE models from sale. This applies to most European markets, although the Czech Apple Store continues to offer the iPhone SE (2022) model.
The trio of models mentioned above are no longer available in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain or Sweden. The devices are also not available in countries that are part of the EU single market. For example, Switzerland.
The EU regulation enters into force
As indicated here, the effectiveness of the regulation enters into force today. It applies to every iPhone sold after this date, including older models. Apple therefore had to intervene and remove these models from the offer. Its newer iPhones 15 and 16 are equipped with USB-C ports, so they meet the EU requirements.
As the UK has left the EU in 2020, this market will not be affected by the regulation. Conversely, Northern Ireland is affected because it still participates in the EU’s single market.
Older models will soon be replaced by new ones
Apple started phasing out non-compliant products last week. The trio of models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE (2022) is ending on the European market. Availability outside the official Apple store is still maintained. However, it is assumed that within a few days these iPhones will not be available even at authorized dealers. These models are almost out of stock.
However, iPhone fans need not despair. According to available information and leaks, a novelty in the form of the iPhone SE 4 model with a USB-C port will come to the market in March 2025.
