A case has been reported of a woman who complained of a gradual narrowing of the vaginal opening due to clitoral hypertrophy.
The medical team at Shalinitai Mege Hospital in India recently published the case of a 23-year-old female patient who had clitoral hypertrophy since birth in the online medical journal Curius. The anonymous patient was admitted to the hospital last year at the age of 22. The patient said that her clitoris, which was initially small, gradually grew larger and her vaginal orifice gradually narrowed over the past two years.
When examined by the medical team, the clitoris measured 6cm x 2cm x 1cm when stimulated, and 4.5cm x 2cm x 1cm normally, and formed a shape like a scrotum, covering the vagina, and the vaginal opening was narrowed to about 5mm. The patient also reported that her facial hair had increased to the point that she had to shave once every two to three days for the past four years, and that she had only started menstruating that year. The medical team explained that the thin woman, who was 137cm tall and weighed 41kg, had almost no breast tissue and showed typical signs of male secondary sexual characteristics.
According to the report, the patient’s clitoris was significantly enlarged and resembled a penis. However, the urethra, through which urine is discharged from the body, and the uterus and ovaries were normal.
The medical team performed genital plastic surgery, including clitoroplasty to reduce the size of the clitoris, labiaplasty to change the labia, and vaginoplasty to remove the fused scrotal skin. The patient was discharged five days after the surgery, and there were no complications. A month later, the sensation was normal, and the patient was very satisfied with the surgery. The patient regained self-esteem and her mental health also improved significantly.
Clitoral hypertrophy is a disease in which the external genitalia develop abnormally and resemble the male genitalia. It is estimated that 1 in 100,000 women worldwide have it. Regardless of the cause, it has a serious and detrimental effect on mental health, causing negative social and mental effects such as low self-esteem and anxiety. It does not affect sexual function, but it can also cause avoidance of relationships.
Clitoral hypertrophy can be present at birth or can develop later. According to the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, if it is present at birth, as in this case, it may be due to excessive exposure to androgens during fetal development. This can result in congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which causes the clitoris to become abnormally large. In addition, congenital diseases that affect the development of the genitals or diseases that cause hormonal imbalances can cause clitoral hypertrophy.
