Umberto Ferrara, one of the people who were part of Jannik Sinner’s staff, did not stay long without commitment. From the new season he will work with another top Italian player, Matteo Berettini.
The world leader has given up his services, as well as those of other collaborators, after testing positive twice for the same banned substance. It didn’t matter that the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) forgave him.
However, the case is still far from over. The World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the request that Sinner receive up to two years of suspension. The final decision will most likely be made in the first part of 2025.
Fired by Sinner after the doping scandal broke, Umberto Ferrara will work with Matteo Berettini
Currently ranked 35th in the ATP, Matteo Berrettini has played in 4 finals in the last months, winning three of them, which proves that he can once again reach the form that in 2021 propelled him into the final act of the Wimbledon tournament. The positive results did not prevent him from completely changing his staff, however.
Until the appointment of a coach to replace Francisco Roig, with whom he parted ways in October, he clapped hands with Umberto Ferrara. He will deal with physical training starting next year.
“I thank him for his work this year, his determination and the results we have achieved together. It was an experience that allowed me to grow on the field and off it,” was the message by which the Italian announced his decision to end his collaboration with Roig.
Jannik Sinner praised by former Serena Williams coach for handling doping case
As for Sinner, Rick Macci, one of Serena Williams’ former coaches, congratulated him on the way he acteddropping Umberto Ferrara and physio Giacomo Naldi. Simona Halep, on the contrary, not only did not blame the staff led by Patrick Mouratoglou, but chose to defend them countless times.
“I was asked again by another journalist if Sinner should be banned for two years because of the doping allegations. I said “of course not”, but several journalists should be suspended for two weeks for doping. By the way he handled this case, he showed another strength: a strong mind,” Macci said.
And he wasn’t the only major white sports figure to jump to the world leader’s defense. Goran Ivanisevic told the protesters: “I sincerely hope they leave Jannik alone and allow him to play. Tennis needs Sinner. When I was working with Cilic I was dealing with WADA and those people, many of whom I don’t like, just want to destroy someone’s life, I know that. I hope that this case of Sinner will be resolved in his favor”.
