The cold snap on the 2025 bonus is looming from 2024 for electric cars

What has been rumored about the 2025 bonus for several weeks is confirmed: even the most modest households will suffer from the reduction in aid.

Households could lose up to €3,000 in aid on the bonus alone, others will lose between €1,000 and €2,000 for this system. No official statement has been made yet, but rumors reported by The Echoes on November 26 seem credible.

The decree should quickly formalize in the coming years the new scales of government aid granted for the year 2025. The trend is necessarily downward, but this is not really a surprise. Since the announcement of the reduction in the budgetary envelope dedicated to low-polluting vehicles, predictions have been rife as to which system would be cut the most: bonus, social leasing or conversion bonus?

A new division of the bonus

Customers have until December 31, 2024 to order and benefit from current assistance. Remember that for eligible electric vehicles, customers can benefit from €4,000 ecological bonus. It is increased to €7,000 for the most modest households, whose tax income is less than €15,400.

Updated 11/26 at 10 p.m.: contrary to the indications provided earlier, the publication of the decree could lead to the immediate application of the new purchasing aid conditions. This would remove the windfall effect of seeing customers rushing to dealerships before the end of the year. On the other hand, this would be a new declaration of war on the automobile industry.

In 2025, a new division and new amounts should be applied according to sources close to the matter. Thus, households with the lowest incomes would go from a bonus of €7,000 to only €4,000 in aid. They would be the main losers from the changes planned for 2025.

While there was only €4,000 in aid for all other households, the group would be split in two in 2025. Households with the highest incomes (last two tax deciles) would see the bonus drop to €2,000, if they purchase a car for less than €47,000 eligible for the eco-score. For the rest of households (middle class), the bonus would only drop by €1,000 to €3,000.

Here, according to rumors, are the amounts planned for 2025:

  • €4,000 bonus for the most modest
  • €3,000 bonus for the middle class
  • €2,000 bonus for the wealthiest households

No changes to the criteria for obtaining the bonus

It is surprising that the government only changes the amounts distributed, without changing the eligibility criteria. To limit the number of applications, governments have often restricted the list of eligible models.

The maximum price of the vehicle purchased has been reduced several times to limit the number of eligible vehicles. In 2024, the government introduced the eco-score, thereby excluding several electric vehicles, particularly those produced in China.

The Echos article does not mention this type of lead, which could reassure manufacturers who have made efforts to place their models below €47,000.

On the other hand, the government risks making a mistake by excluding commercial vehicles from the bonus. This point will need to be monitored carefully.
