“It is clear that if the house is beautiful, it does not mean that everything that is done there is good,” admits Ülle Matsin, head of general education policy of the Ministry of Education, in the “Äripää opinion leader” program.
By 2030, all general education should be in Estonian, but will the current solution really bring us Estonian-language education or only Estonian-language Russian schools?
Ülle Matsin, head of general education policy at the Ministry of Education, believes that the first option is still the case, but according to him, this is a process that will not reach the final result easily.
It is necessary to retrain Russian-speaking teachers, but also to deal with the next generation as a whole. “The topic of teacher succession is actually pan-European,” emphasizes Matsin.
He promises that this year there will be many educational policy arrangements that will help teachers. We have not forgotten that teachers went on strike over working conditions and pay only in the spring.
Matsin believes that education policy is moving in the right direction and that state gymnasiums are an integral part of it. He also emphasizes that the provision of secondary education in one municipality cannot be a solution to regional problems.
In the interview, he talks about the better linking of vocational education with the current general education policy and also about criticism of so-called combined schools in general.
