A PSP deteve a man suspected of stealing various computer equipment from conference participants which have taken place in Lisbon since the beginning of October, the police announced in a statement.
The 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday out of the act on suspicion of the crime of qualified theft, having stolen equipment from participants, such as computers, telephones and cameras, at the events. The suspect prepared the action “in detail and meticulously”, starting by studying and selecting the conferences that interested him, and after registering appeared at the event “in a discreet way”.
“During the “coffee break”, when the room was empty, I surreptitiously stole the participants’ computer equipment. He then left the space in possession of the most diverse equipment, from computers, tablets, cell phones, headphones and photographic equipment,” said the police.
The man participated in conferences “in a cyclical manner” and always with the same objective, making this activity your way of life.
The security force indicated that the suspect was approached near a hotel where a conference was being held and was in possession of a set of signal blocking bags, which indicated that he was preparing for a new robbery.
Photographic equipment valued at approximately 17 thousand euros was seized, which is suspected to have come from the thefts.
According to the police source, the man, who will be heard by an investigating judge to apply coercive measures, had already been arrested for the same type of crime at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016.
