The judge of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe today imposed investigative custody on a sympathizer of the Islamic State (IS), who is suspected of preparing an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin. The spokeswoman of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office told DPA about it.
The police arrested a Libyan citizen on Saturday evening in Bernau, near Berlin. The man had communicated with an IS member via a chat app to plan the attack, authorities said, before the detention decision was made. They specified that the suspect allegedly wanted to attack with firearms.
After Saturday’s arrest, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann warned of a “very serious” threat from Islamist terrorism in Germany. “Israeli institutions are particularly often targeted by terrorists,” the minister told DPA.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stressed the importance of protecting Israeli and Jewish institutions, which is “of the utmost importance” to the German government. “Given the high level of threat from Islamist, anti-Semitic and anti-Israel violence, we are acting with the utmost vigilance and attention,” she said.
Police searched the suspect’s apartment in Bernau near Berlin on Saturday evening. They also searched the apartment in North Rhine-Westphalia of a person who is not suspected of a crime and is a witness in the case.
According to Bild, the suspect is a man from Libya who allegedly traveled to Germany in November 2022. He applied for asylum in January 2023; at the end of September of that year, the authorities rejected the request and the man was to be deported to Libya. Nevertheless, he continued to live in an apartment in Bernau.
