On Monday, September 16, 2024, the police had to make a termination decision for a bear that made repeated visits to the yard in Rautavaara’s Marjomäentie. On Saturday, the police had made a deportation decision for the same bear, which led the Rautavaara game management association to carry out the bear deportation task (SRVA task) on Sunday. In this case, with the help of dogs, the bear was moved about 5.5 km away from the property to be evicted. In that context, the bear killed another dog used in the SRVA mission.
Another attempt was made to expel the animal on Monday morning, when the animal returned to the same property and its yard. The bear’s behavior during both expulsions was exceptional, because it kept trying to return to the same property in front of the dogs and despite the people. There are several beehives in the property’s well-kept yard area, which presumably attracted the bear to return to the site.
When milder measures did not make the bear stay away, the police decided to euthanize the bear. The police’s competence in the task is based on the Police Act. A bear that moves in the built environment amidst human activities and is fearless towards people poses a danger to human life and health. Because of this, the animal had to be euthanized. The bear was killed by SRVA operators on Monday afternoon about 2.5 km from the property, where it repeatedly tried to return.
The bear was a large male that weighed 260 kg. The animal is sent to the Food Agency in Oulu for examination.
