While Marvel is counting billions of dollars for hits and celebrating hundreds of millions of minutes watched by viewers on Disney+, the creators of these characters have to do without. They sit in front of a monitor like us and learn everything from YouTube.
Not so long ago, we reported on the announcement of the next and final part of the Venom trilogy. A series that presents the consequences of the crossing of paths between a symbiote of unknown origin and investigative journalist Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy. Before their shared history ends, they must first face a powerful being together. The creators of this character did not even know about it.
Suddenly they saw a character they had created themselves
What a surprise it must have been. When Ryan Stegman and Donny Cates, sitting in their own four walls, started scrolling through social media and suddenly notifications started bombarding from every side. Here was the reveal of Venom’s final opponent in his last film, the mighty Knull.
“Yes, I co-created Knull. No, I didn’t know he’d be in Venom: The Last Dance until today. Yes, I expect I’ll eventually be able to afford that boring moat around my house,” Stegman joked on X (Formerly Twitter).
The second creator was not subtle in his response and simply posted “lol” with a Venom graphic, but backwards. The caption looks remarkably similar to another word, “Money.” Unfortunately, we know that Marvel is not a company known for fairly compensating the creators of comic book heroes.
Offensive low amounts
In a podcast co-hosted by renowned director Kevin Smith, the co-creator of Winter Soldier (Ed Brubaker) recounts how he felt forced to ignore a check sent by Disney. It was a payment honoring his part in creating such an important character. Embarrassingly low, and on top of that, he had to attend the lavish premiere of “Winter Soldier.” That is, the screening of the film, and he and the other creator, artist Steve Epting, were not invited to the after-party.
Similar stories also befell the creators of Black Panther and Thanos. Icons that many pop culture fans know today, and which are partly responsible for the huge success that superhero movies and their adversaries are in our times.
