According to information
on December 23, a targeted terrorist attack was committed against the cargo ship.
Crew members reported that three consecutive explosions were heard from the stern, after which the ship tipped on its side and sank. 14 of the 16 crew members were rescued, but two sailors are listed as missing. The sailors are all Russian citizens.
Oboronlogistics emphasized that the cargo ship built in 2009, capable of transporting 9,500 tons of cargo, was not overloaded, carried a fraction of the maximum permissible weight. The crisis team of the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Tuesday that the cargo ship
sank after an explosion in her engine room.
According to the Oboronlogistics company, which is dependent on the Russian Ministry of Defense but also provides civilian transport and logistics services, the Ursa Major was bound for Vladivostok in the Russian Far East and was carrying harbor cranes and decks for icebreakers.
