The Dutch Cycling Association announced that 24-year-old racer Bas van Belle had died. The reasons for his sudden death are still unknown.
In Zurich, Switzerland, on Sunday afternoon, the world championship in road cycling culminated with the spectacular victory of Tadej Pogačar. But fans of this sport have been receiving one sad news after another in recent days.
After Friday’s tragic accident involving 18-year-old Furrer, another promising cyclist lost his life. “It is with great sadness and regret that we learned of the unexpected death of Bas van Bell. We mourn his loss,” the Dutch association said in a statement.
“We will remember him as a warm and friendly person and also as a talented cyclist,” the federation said.
Van Belle wore the jersey of Wielerploeg Groot Amsterdam. His younger brother is a member of the professional Team Visma-Lease a Bike and rising cycling star Loe van Blle.
