The Czechs stunned the world. Unique robots monitor the life of bees

  • Scientists from CTU lead a team that monitors bees with the help of AI
  • They built special robots that became part of the bee colony
  • They received over 100 million images in the first month

Czech scientists claimed another success and world first. An international team led by experts from the Czech University of Technology (ČVUT), specifically from Centers of artificial intelligence FELbuilt two robots that he placed directly in a bee colony. They are their heart two autonomous cameraswhich monitor not only the workers, but above all the queen bee, the number of eggs laid and the total population in the hive. And constantly and in such a way that they do not interfere in the life of the bees.

It therefore works with infrared light and the system does not need human control. It constantly takes pictures, which it processes with the help of artificial intelligence. Daily it’s about 1 400 GB that and in the first month of operation, the experts won over 100 million photos. These, thanks to AI analysis, allowed them to gain insight into the life of bees in a way that had never been possible before.

If that sounds more laughable than important, you’re wrong. With their breakthrough project, they even made it to the front page of a scientific magazine Science Robotics. The beginning of their efforts dates back to the year 2021but they are definitely not done yet. The collected data will continue to be analyzed with the help of AI and specialized software.

The result of their work should not be just a simple study of life in the hive. The findings could be useful in the field agricultureas well as they might be important for ecology.
