The consultative referendum on the project of the second block of the Krša nuclear power plant will take place on November 24, deputies in the National Assembly confirmed today.

With 65 votes in favor and seven against, the deputies adopted the decree on the call for a consultative referendum on the implementation of the project of the second block of the nuclear power plant (Jek 2), which will take place on November 24. The referendum question will read: “Do you support the implementation of the Jek 2 project, which, together with other low-carbon sources, will ensure a stable supply of electricity?”

Supporters of the referendum – members of Svoboda with an exception Miroslav GregoričSDS, SD and NSi – interpreted that an affirmative answer to the referendum question would mean a mandate for the government, the investor and other stakeholders to continue with the procedures for the preparation of the project, but not yet a decision on the construction of the power plant.

The people’s mandate is important, among other things, because investments in the amount of more than 100 million euros are said to be necessary to prepare for the final decision, including for research activities and personnel.

According to the members of the Left Party and Gregorič and an unrelated member of parliament Mojca Šetinc Pašek however, approval would mean support for the entire project, including the construction of the power plant. It is still too early for this kind of question, as not enough data is known yet, they warned.

The National Electoral Commission will decide at its meeting on Friday on the adoption of acts for the implementation of the referendum, the commission announced. According to the adopted decree, the deadlines for tasks will begin on October 14.
