In 2019, DC Comics marks a huge blow with the feature film Joker. In addition to winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival – one of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema – and two Oscars, including one awarded to Joaquin Phoenix, the film exceeds a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, for a budget estimated at barely 60 million. It also became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, before being overtaken this summer by Deadpool & Wolverine du Marvel Cinematic Universe. Building on the success of the film despite some controversies over its relationship to violence, Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to produce a sequel, still written and directed by Todd Phillips.
Released on October 2, 2024 in France and two days later in the United States, Joker: Folie À Deux was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of the year. However, the film got off to a disastrous start… In addition to having collected barely 20 million dollars on its first day of operation on American soil – less than the catastrophic The Flash et The Marvels -, the continuation of Joker expected to gross between $35 million and $42 million at the box office after its first weekend. Or three times less than Joker first of the name… Let’s not forget that the budget of Joker: Folie À Deux is estimated at 200 million dollars!
We also learn that the company CinemaScore, which measures the appeal of films to spectators during their first evening of release to give them a grade between A and F, has just awarded Joker: Folie À Deux grade D. Which is the worst rating ever given to a film adapted from a comic book… Until today it was the terrible movie The Fantastic Four (2015) which was the holder of this sad record, with a grade of C-. For comparison, Morbius (2022) et Madame Web (2024) obtained a grade of C+.
Obviously, the CinemaScore rating is in no way representative of the quality of a film, but is an indicator taken very seriously by Hollywood studios. Joker: Folie À Deux however, met with some support, notably from the legendary Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Dracula). The Pope of New Hollywood congratulated Todd Phillips: “Since the marvelous Very Bad Triphe is always one step ahead of the audience and never does what is expected of him.
