The tennis players of Kazakhstan advanced to the semi-finals of the United Cup in Australia after defeating the defending champions Germany 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

The opening point was taken care of by Jelena Rybakinová, who handled Laura Siegemundová smoothly 6:3, 6:1.

Alexander Zverev was supposed to start the second singles duel, but shortly before it started, he withdrew from the tournament due to a biceps injury.

He was replaced by Daniel Mazur, who lost to Alexander Shevchenko 7:6 (5), 2:6, 2:6.

“I am proud to have turned the tide and helped my team progress to the elite quartet. I was a little nervous, because I knew that it could be decided after the singles,” Ševčenko was quoted as saying by the DPA agency.

The Poles, who beat the Czech Republic 2:1 in the decisive match, advanced to the quarter-finals as winners of Group B.
