The delay in the announcement of the new election date fueled distrust in the institutions

Asked, on Europa FM, if he is satisfied with the way the Romanian institutions reacted in the context of foreign interference in the elections, Ilie Bolojan says that he would have liked it if the authorities had been better prepared against such interference.

“The problem is that when a seed reaches a fertile soil – and our fertile soil is the general mistrust in society, which is very strong, especially in the area of the governors, so people have very little confidence in the political world, unfortunately several times rightly so – then these bad seeds, the seed of social division, the seed of antagonism taken to the extreme, take root very easily”, says the liberal leader.

Regarding the source of mistrust, Bolojan states that it comes from many aspects: “if you promise something in a campaign and after the campaign you don’t respect those promises from the start, your trust quota is on the ground. (…) From my point of view, a main reason why, in a society, the degree of social mistrust is low, is also the way in which it is governed. Good governance generally breeds trust, good rules and justice breed trust between people. (…) The more transparent an institution is, the more it shows what it can do, what it can’t do and why it can’t do it, the higher the trust again. The more a cause that seems unclear, a reason that is not clearly perceived, is not well explained, the more it gets stuck, the more all kinds of scenarios are made. Consider, for example, that during this period, with the cancellation of the presidential elections, there was the question of when the elections would be held. The fact that it was only extended by a week or two, the announcement of a definite date for the elections, caused all kinds of discussions to appear. But why was it prolonged? But does anyone still want to stay in office? Will it last until the fall? And all kinds of things like that.”

Democracies are under “a slight assault” today and “if they are not careful what they are doing, this mistrust can reach heights that pass into an area of public aggression, an area of chaos,” adds Ilie Bolajan.

Asked if Romania risks ending up in the area of chaos he is talking about, Bolojan said: “I do not want this in any way, and here is a problem of responsibility both on the part of the authorities and also on the part of the citizens, because chaos never brought no prosperity and no future. The protests are intensifying, there is no problem, because it is a democracy, you can protest. But if from the protests things degenerate or go to a certain area, things are definitely not going in a good direction”.
