On Sunday morning, the Smer political party started a ceremonial meeting on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its founding.

Approximately 1,560 guests gathered at the exhibition center in Bratislava’s Petržalka. In addition to the party leadership, members of the National Council and MEPs, several members of the government also came for Smer.
Also present is SNS leader Andrej Danko, Hlas chairman Matúš Šutaj Eštok, as well as Peter Žiga (Hlas), deputy speaker of the parliament entrusted with its leadership. Former president Ivan Gašparovič is also among the guests.
In addition to the cultural program and speeches by party officials, greetings in the form of a video speech are also expected. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, Czech ex-president Miloš Zeman, as well as Czech ex-prime minister Andrej Babiš, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán and Serbian president Aleksandar Vučič will address the parliament delegates via video.
The party has been led since its creation in 1999 by Robert Fico, who is currently the prime minister. “In terms of value, the Smer party is profiled as a standard left-wing party that promotes the strong position of the state in the economy and the responsibility of society to protect vulnerable population groups,” the party writes on its website.
