The Director of Geodynamics in “Jungle”: The tremors in Attica are part of the same seismic sequence of December 11

The earthquakes that occurred this morning and were felt mainly in the areas of Chalandrio, Pallini and Agia Paraskevi, have worried the residents of the capital, as their small focal depth, the noise and of course the fact that they take place right under the urban area, makes them noticeable.

At 3:22, a magnitude 2.7 earthquake was recorded. According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 2 kilometers southwest of Chalandrio, while the focal depth is estimated at 5.7 kilometers.

A little later, almost simultaneously, at 08:54 two new earthquakes occurred: 2.2 on the Richter scale, one kilometer west-southwest of Pallini, with a focal depth of five kilometers and 2 on the Richter scale, four kilometers west-southwest of Agia Paraskevi, with a focal depth of 8 ,3 kilometers.

OR “Jungle” contact him seismologist Vassilis Karastathi, who is director of the Geodynamic Institutewho told us that the morning earthquakes had the same focal area as their epicenter. They are located between Chalandrio and Neo Psychikos and are part of the same seismic activity that started on December 11.

As mentioned by Mr. Karastathis the estimates of the seismologists have not changed so far. They consider that the seismic sequence does not cause particular concern, as it is spatially localized in a small area, in which there is no history of major earthquakes. “However, because this seismic activity is happening under the urban areas of Athens, we have to be very careful,” he explained.

The director of the Geodynamic Institute explained to us that these earthquakes are felt because right above them the entire zone is fully inhabited. “Such small events, on the order of 2.7, are very common. But here we understand the concern because it is right under people’s houses”, said Mr. Karastathis.
