The Discman is back with this modern successor

A new portable CD player revives the old days of the Sony Discman, but in a modern jacket. For example, you don’t need AA batteries and you can also listen wirelessly via Bluetooth.

If you are of a certain age, you still have shelves and folders full of CDs in your home. Most people have them gathering dust, although there are also plenty of hifi enthusiasts who still regularly put on a CD. Just like with vinyl, there are also fanatical collectors of CDs. And believe it or not, but some old albums are still not on Spotify (Chill Out by The KLF, for example).

The Chinese manufacturer FiiO came earlier this year with a new portable cassette player as a follow-up to the Sony Walkman. This time the brand is breathing new life into another famous gadget by coming up with a modern version of the Discmanthe portable CD player that Sony introduced in 1984. The Discman was very popular until MP3 players like the iPod came along.

If you want to listen to such an old disc on the go, you can now buy a new portable CD player for it. The FiiO DM13 has USB-C and Bluetooth, so you can listen to it with wireless headphones or earphones. The Bluetooth connection supports the AptX, AptX HD, AptX Low Latency and SBC codes. Of course, the DM13 also has a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack and a symmetrical 4.4 mm port for hi-fi headphones. The portable CD player has a battery life of eight hours.

The DM13 can also be connected to a stereo system via analog, SPDIF and USB connections. When connected to a power source via USB, the CD player can be set to desktop mode, so that it does not use the rechargeable battery.

One of the features of the new device was also in the Discman and similar portable CD players of yesteryear: electronic shock protection. This buffers the music to prevent it from skipping when you walk around with the DM13.

The Fiio DM13 will be available in silver, red, blue, black and titanium and will be available for purchase from September for 179 euros.
