Phosphorite will be needed by mankind for the rest of this century, but the future of the earth metals mined with it is much more uncertain.
In Estonia, more and more test drilling is being done to understand how much and in what composition there is phosphorite under Virumaa. If you are lucky, it could be a source of wealth for the entire nation across generations.
However, Rutt Hints from TTU’s Institute of Geology pulls the tour down a bit with the first move. “We are talking about a relatively low-quality raw material, which is difficult to valorize – in case we would also like to extract rare earth metals from it,” explained Hints in the “Äripää opinion leader” program.
At the same time, he says that this picture will become much clearer during the investigation, although he believes that it is naive to dream, as if all this could have the same effect on Estonia as it did on Norway half a century ago, when a lot of oil was found in the North Sea.
In the show, Hints explains why and how subsoil research must be done, how to mitigate social tensions, and what is the time perspective for all of this to start bringing billions of benefits.

Estonia wants to start mining everything that is worth mining, the country would earn hundreds of millions of euros every year, and the people living near the mines would receive a living wage.
