The Dutch digital economy continues to grow, but geopolitical uncertainties leave their mark

The Dutch digital economy will continue to grow unabated in the third quarter of 2024, according to the latest edition of the Quarterly Digital Economy Monitor.

As the economy recovers, the willingness to invest in digitalization and new technologies also increases. At the same time, there are challenges such as Europe’s international competitiveness and geopolitical shifts, especially in the United States, that could have a major impact. These developments lead to an increased focus by government and business on their own digital infrastructure.

The latest Digital Economy Quarterly Monitor shows that the Dutch digital economy continued to grow in the third quarter of 2024, despite a challenging economic environment. Here are the key trends and insights:

The digital economy recorded a growth of 1.7% in added value, comparable to the total economic growth. Although solid, there remains room for more dynamics within the digital sector.

Companies continue to invest in technologies such as cloud solutions and AI, driven by the need for greater efficiency and new revenue models. For the first time in years, the number of digital jobs increased significantly, with a growth of 6%.

The demand for data centers and network capacity continues to increase. Yet challenges such as grid congestion and a lack of social support for new projects are obstacles to further development.

Geopolitical tensions increase the need for a robust and sovereign digital infrastructure in the Netherlands, both from an economic and strategic perspective.
