The editor in Google Photos gets a feature you’ll love

  • The video editor in Google Photos will allow you to speed up playback
  • There will be 5 different speeds to choose from
  • The tool will appear under the new icon 1x

You no longer need to use a computer or third-party mobile apps for basic video editing. If you are more modest and only basic editing is enough for you, Google Photos may be fully sufficient for you in this regard. But the fact is that they don’t offer as much as other editors – so Google keeps working on various improvements. And one of them is about to fall.

As can be seen from Google Photos version 6.90a new tool has been added to it, which will be displayed under the icon next to the existing ones „1x“. If you open it, a new user interface will appear in front of you with your video at the top and various playback speed options in the bottom part. Google gives you a choice of 5 different speeds: 1/4x, 1/2x, 1x, 2x a 4x.

Interestingly, speeding up or slowing down playback may not apply to the entire video. It will also be available timeline, on which you can choose a section of the recording to speed up or slow down. Alternatively, you can edit the video as a whole.

But you can’t edit multiple different sections of the video in one step, which is quite annoying. The only solution is to edit one section, then save the video and then start editing the next part in the same way.

You won’t find this speed-up/slow-down option in the current version of Google Photos. It will probably come with one of the next updates, but Google has not announced the exact date. At the same time, of course, all other video editing tools such as cropping or adding special effects.

If you need to work with video at a more professional level, Google Photos probably won’t be enough for you. Just because the range of effects and the number of acceleration options is very limited. In this case, it is advisable to reach for one of the professional tools, which are often available for free in the basic version and can do countless things – for example, GoPro, KineMaster or CapCut.
